Pockets Full Hearts Empty

We walk this world
With our pockets full
Of stuff
No one these days
Goes empty
Except the refugee
And the man
Who lost his house
To a forest fire.

They are here
To teach us
That what we think we have
Can disappear
At any moment
Yet still
We can walk with dignity
And pride.
Even with our pockets empty
We are worthy of love
And compassion.

Everyone arrives
And everyone leaves
Yet we walk
Weighed down
With our pockets full
But our hearts empty.
