The Warrior Carries Sorrow

Today my heart is broken open in sorrow
A million stories that end in grief
A young man snatched from his life
Driving down the road minding his business
His killers life wrecked by his decision to drink and drive
On this very street of ours
The news littered with tragedy
But most unseen and unknown
A vast ocean, a tsunami
Of human and animal suffering
That terrifies us
And threatens our very sanity
So we shield ourselves from it
Ah! but that makes us cold and unfeeling

How can we carry sorrow
Without it overwhelming us

By not fighting it
The divine gives us what we can take
And we are wider than we know
And deeper than we imagine

As for me, I do not fight sorrow
I see life and beauty in it
The inexorable consequence of form
And, although it hurts
I know the wave that rises and falls
And my sorrow is connected to my joy

Sorrow, like grief, is our humanity lived
The denial or turning away from it
Is what makes us unfeeling and detached
Don’t be scared of sorrow
It’s your friend in disguise.
