We risk it all every day
We are hardwired to it
And there is nothing we can do
Only the hardest of hearts
Can keep it out
And they suffer terribly

We gamble it all
Because we must
Because we are here
Because we are human

The risk is having our hearts broken
The gamble is loving without condition

There is no choice but to love
And the true human being
Is forged by a broken heart
For this is where we discover our humanity
And we see that humanity in others

Life is fragile and precious
How we forget this until we suddenly remember

I say remember how sacred everything is
And hold that sacredness close
Without fear or control
But with great tenderness.
