THE DREAM THAT PASSED

And a great sorrow did descend upon the people
Like a dark cloud that creeps across the sky
And that sorrow brought much wailing and grief
Most fell upon their knees, tears rolling down dry cheeks
Upon the ground, desperate for love

It was a tragic and holy sight to behold
And, for the duration of that momentous event,
The whole phenomenal world fell silent
The animals ceased their activity
The trees became still
Even the fish and sea creatures stopped swimming
As if to bear witness to this miraculous sight

Slowly, as if grace itself had taken action,
Tiny green and vibrant shoots
Poked their heads above ground
Everywhere a genuine tear had fallen
A new shoot appeared
First one, then another, then hundreds,
And then millions, across the parched earth

And then a great joy did arise within the people
As though the dark cloud had lifted
And they had awoken refreshed after a deep dream
Singing, dancing, loving, they celebrated their freedom
And they bowed their heads in gratitude
To the divine intelligence that governs all things.
