This morning
In the early hours of silent dawning
The gentle sound
Of a conversation
Wrapped me in its arms
The coyote yipped its magic and trickery
It spoke of how things are not what they seem to be
And it laughed at how serious owl was
Owl was silent for a long time
Unimpressed with coyote’s jibes
‘I see you coyote, even in this darkness,’
Said the wise owl
This jousting game continued for some time
Each taking its turn
Coyote darting around, needling owl
And owl looking on with regal nonchalance
Both carried the wisdom of the deepest intelligence
And as I lay there
Absorbed by the yip yip and the hoot hoot
I fell into a reverie
Of such beauty I wept
Everything, and everyone, all humans
And all the creatures of the world
Warm blooded and cold blooded
Flying creatures and swimming creatures
Were dancing the dance of existence
Even the trees and the plants
And the rocks and the planets
Were doing the dance of existence
Each content with its own realm of being
And each filled with joy
At seeing the others dancing
Everything in utter harmony
With everything else
When I awoke all was silence
Dawn was breaking open
Yet, somewhere in the distance,
From the top of a tall tree
A crow sang the world awake.
