We are all thrown around
And buffeted by the same waves
It never stops, this movement,
Until we depart these shores
Sometimes it seems
We have tamed the waves
Or learned to surf them
With dexterity and grace
And then we turn our backs
Or slip into arrogance
And a mighty thunderous
Wall of water engulfs us
Half drowns us
And turns us upside down
We cough, splutter and cry
Rail against the water
Rage against the ocean itself
Then we dry ourselves off
And begin again
In many ways
That’s all there is.
