A Mirror of the Eternal

Great plans are made by us
And changed by God
We rail and scream and shout
But eventually we surrender
It’s not cruel, although it feels that way,
It’s a mystery we don’t understand
And, like all things out of our control,
We are terrified

We struggle with our existence
Terrified of our mortality
Terrified it means nothing
So we foist meaning onto everything
In the hope some of it sticks

But life confounds our plans
And casts our meaning aside

Whatever intelligence brought us here
Weaves patterns across time
A tapestry in eternity
Of which we are a tiny, but beautiful, blip
We are significant because
We are a reflection, an imprint
Of the tapestry
A mirror of eternity
Beyond anything we can imagine
This realization is shattering.

The Precious Jewel Called Life

You don’t have to earn the right to be here
Or justify your existence
Or prove your worthiness
The exquisite fact that existence
Has brought you here as you
Is enough
For you to celebrate
And stand in wonder

We take it all for granted
Until the last moment
Or until love is snatched from us
And then we see the miracle

Make that last moment every moment
Don’t forget the simple miracle that is life.

You Are The One You Seek

This heart of ours
Is a mysterious thing
Intrinsically connected
To mind and feeling
We say ‘it breaks,’
But it doesn’t really break
We say ‘it opens,’
But it doesn’t really open
We might say we are ‘heavy of heart,’
But the heart is not really heavier

The mysterious heart of us
Holds secrets of life
For us to unlock
It holds the truth of us
Our pain, sorrow, and joy
It holds that which we deny
And turn away from

For many, it is an unexplored cave,
With jewels undiscovered
This most holy of places
Thrives on truth and beauty
Because it only wants to love

Friend, feed your heart,
Not just your mind
Water it daily with poetry
With music and creative abandon
Ignite the flame you long for
Dance, sing, shake it all out
We live in these walls
And they suffocate us

We were born for mystery
We are adventurers
And the most glorious adventure
Is into your own heart.

The Stillness Within

Staying open while all around
Fall into closure and reactivity
Is like being the eye in the storm
Or the peace in the deepest ocean
While the waves thrash around

Like the zen master
Who sits silently
Even as his own thoughts
Live and then die

If we can find that stillness within
Not through force but surrender
Nothing much will bother us again
And that is a boon to this high drama world

The world will not stop its movement
But we have the capacity
To offer it our stillness.

The Wanderer in Form

I have fallen into love’s open arms
There is no place left within me
That is a harbor for falsehood
Or righteous trickery
Illusory world that deceives us
And pulls us into desire
No longer has power over me
I have become a slave to love
And a servant of truth
There is no great regaling at this
For it hurts to leave the world
And yet still walk in the world
One must endure a constant heartbreak
This dismantling of all structures
Renders you empty
And in that emptiness
Must you walk
Half ecstatic, half desolate
A wanderer in form
Seeking nothing
But falling forever into the unknown.

What Really Matters is Love

We have such a tendency
To get lost in things
That really don’t matter
Except in that precious moment
We get triggered easily
And we get lost, say things we might not mean
Do things we might regret
And we forget what really matters

Ego screams ‘I am what really matters,
I must be right, or wrong, or powerful
I must get what I want beyond anything else.’

But that’s just a petulant child
Having a tantrum

What really matters is found in the deepest
Love’s true and authentic expression and connection
Love is what really matters
And not just a co-dependent kind of love
Not the love that barters with life
But one that is inherently giving not taking
There is an extraordinary power in love
When it is not held in self ownership
The true heroes and heroines of humanity
Are not the conquerers or the kings
But those that have stood up in love
Those that have spread love’s fire
No matter what risk or ridicule

There is world changing power in love
But first we must decide
What really matters.

Cherish This Day

We may be gone forever
When we leave this world
There is no guarantee of return
And yet we live our lives
Hidden and ashamed
Our light occluded
By imaginary shadows
As though we are here forever
We suppress our creative impulse
And struggle with our worth
But really, who cares,
Everything and everyone here will be gone
Dissolved into the dust of time
Nothing will be left

Throw off the chains today
Again and again
Dance in the mess of it all
Be wild and free
Cry and laugh and grieve your sorrow
Paint and write and sing your joy
Pick up an instrument
And make some noise
Tell everyone you love them
Give gifts to loved ones
And strangers alike
Make someone’s day
By paying them attention
Shine your light now, today
It may be all over tomorrow.

Our True Nature Is Calling

Come my friend take my hand
And I will lead you into the mystery
Into the infinite realms of being
Where time flows in all directions
Where our star consciousness
Flows beyond all notion of body
Where everything is spinning
And everything is one thing
There is ecstasy in your heart
But you have forgotten how to find it

We have lived too long with heads bowed
In servitude
We have forgotten our humble grace
And our true nature as innocence
We became lost in our narcissism
And now we fight among ourselves
Like hyenas picking at our own carcass

This is not our destiny
To lose ourselves
To lose our divine connection
To become slaves to form
To endlessly fight each other

It is not what we are for

Remember, my fellow traveler,
Remember your self
We come from the stars
We are innocent and free
Beautiful and wild
And that’s what is calling us
In these collapsing times.

The Eternal Dance of the Beloved

With enough grace and humility
With the right amount of surrender
And willingness to accept life as it is
When the wounds turn to gifts
And all argument with life is yielded
When righteousness is tucked away
And all ego upholding has vanished
Into the river of inevitability
Eventually it all becomes the beloved

Life itself is recognized as the true lover
And you realize you have only ever
Been dancing with god
Dancing as god

There is no separate self
Everything, including you dear heart,
Is a manifestation of the beloved
Yet somehow you manage to imagine
That you are set apart
And not included in the eternal dance
But oh! you are
it is coming through you, as you,
Always, in always

I have seen this truth
And once truly seen
It can never be ignored
Life is the eternal dance of the beloved
And we are that dance.

Awaken the Sleeping Heart

Alone in the pristine silence
Of an early morning
In Santa Fe
He became aware
Of an incredible sadness
That quickly transformed into beauty

He realized that life itself
Is a precious jewel
Callously disregarded
By the mind that seeks
More of everything

He saw the ruby in our hand
Thrown aside
In our ignorance
And inherited trauma

He wept at the heartbreak of it all
It was as though the door of grief
Opened itself to him
And there was nothing he could do
But drown

Friend, if we could but see
Beyond our own reflection
Into the majesty
Into the mystery
If we could throw open all the doors
We desperately keep shut
What miraculous joys would we behold
Surely we would begin to see
Flowers growing everywhere

And the garden we left
Would appear once again
Under our feet
As we walk
Step by humble step

I long to awaken your sleeping heart
Buried under the weight of all this heaviness
Not dead, just hibernating,
Waiting for the time to arise
Now is the time.
