Embrace Your Wounds

After a fractured life of complete avoidance
That led me nowhere but misery
I faced myself
And decided to love what I saw
I included all that had been excluded
And shone the light of love
On my own darkness

What happened over time
Was a complete reconfiguration
Of the whole of me
From fragmented to whole
It was as though everything
That had been off line
Came on line
And in that coming home
Everything changed
And I became fully myself

When our wounds are embraced
They become our gifts
Denied they become our burden.

This is not theory. It is my experience.

The Eternal Dance of the Beloved

With enough grace and humility
With the right amount of surrender
And willingness to accept life as it is
When the wounds turn to gifts
And all argument with life is yielded
When righteousness is tucked away
And all ego upholding has vanished
Into the river of inevitability
Eventually it all becomes the beloved

Life itself is recognized as the true lover
And you realize you have only ever
Been dancing with god
Dancing as god

There is no separate self
Everything, including you dear heart,
Is a manifestation of the beloved
Yet somehow you manage to imagine
That you are set apart
And not included in the eternal dance
But oh! you are
it is coming through you, as you,
Always, in always

I have seen this truth
And once truly seen
It can never be ignored
Life is the eternal dance of the beloved
And we are that dance.

Life Is Your Lover, So Love It

Life itself is your
One true lover
Such an intimacy
It has with you
It knows you so well
It knows how to trigger you
It implores you to surrender
But you resist your lover
You try and control it
You say, ‘No! You should be like this,
You should do it this way.’
But still your lover
Confounds you
And beseeches you
To love it anyway

Life is your lover
But you find it so hard
To accept this truth
When life doesn’t look
Like you want it to look

I say
Fall in love with life
Even as it hurts like hell
Even as it causes such grief and sorrow
Even as it wrenches us apart
Fall in love anyway
The world, your soul
And your aching heart
Will be better off
Than all this resentment
And resistance you carry.

Beyond the World

Some one asked me what I do
I said, ‘I get up, go about my day
As best I can, then retire at night.’

Someone else asked me who I am
I said, ‘I am no thing, the air
The sky and the mountain
I am a whisper on god’s lips
And the morning dew
That delights as the sun rises.’

I said, ’Let us talk of love and beauty
And leave the world behind
We can fly into the unknown realms
And even forget, just for one sweet moment,
That we have these bodies
And we live on this spinning globe
We can forget our senses, our perceptions
Our beliefs, all our doing things
All our strategies and our woes
Our wars and conflicts and problems,
And we can fly off into our star nature
And circle the infinite and eternal universe
Through and beyond time
Into the timelessness of all existence

And then, when we return
We can sit quietly together
And just be.’

Go Deeper

On the surface
The waves contort
In confused patterns
They push and pull
In frenzied manner
This way, that way
An endless drama
With no end

But deeper down
There is silence
A kind of serenity
With less effort needed
The waves are seen
And not resisted
Yet this stillness
Is unaffected

The deepest holds it all
It’s where the roots are
And yet we place our attention
Only on the waves
And wonder why
We feel lost and exhausted

He, or she, who ignores
Their deeper most truth
Is destined for frustration
And the feeling
That something is missing
Because it is

Go deeper
Become a diver
It doesn’t matter what you find
It’s in the diving
You discover who you are.

Awaken the Sleeping Heart

Alone in the pristine silence
Of an early morning
In Santa Fe
He became aware
Of an incredible sadness
That quickly transformed into beauty

He realized that life itself
Is a precious jewel
Callously disregarded
By the mind that seeks
More of everything

He saw the ruby in our hand
Thrown aside
In our ignorance
And inherited trauma

He wept at the heartbreak of it all
It was as though the door of grief
Opened itself to him
And there was nothing he could do
But drown

Friend, if we could but see
Beyond our own reflection
Into the majesty
Into the mystery
If we could throw open all the doors
We desperately keep shut
What miraculous joys would we behold
Surely we would begin to see
Flowers growing everywhere

And the garden we left
Would appear once again
Under our feet
As we walk
Step by humble step

I long to awaken your sleeping heart
Buried under the weight of all this heaviness
Not dead, just hibernating,
Waiting for the time to arise
Now is the time.

When Love Moved In

When love moved in
It changed everything
Fear moved out
Judgement disappeared
Even self righteousness
Went to stay somewhere else
All the unwanted guests
Who had taken up residence
Just vanished
No more sweeping truth under the carpet
No more foreboding
Nothing left but emptiness
And the sweet fragrance
Of silence

In this new atmosphere
Kindness returned
Joy arrived and settled in
Tenderness filled the air
And playfulness arose with childlike innocence

But this love was like nothing else
It demanded authenticity
And open hearted expression
Yes, it meant vulnerability
And sometimes tears and pain

But this love filled the house
With the most beautiful fragrance
One you could not buy anywhere
No store could stock it
And no one could manufacture it
There are some things we cannot buy.
