The Artist Saves Humanity From A Dry Existence

The linearity of this level of consciousness
Preoccupied by past, present, future
By the rational, practical and ordered mind
By survival and shelter
Is so dry and barren
When left to it’s own devices

It is only salvaged by creativity
By the artist
The poet
The mystic
The wild one
Who goes beyond
Who stumbles into the unknown
Who goes beyond the limit

They bring meaning
Something extraordinary
They shine a light
Remind us of our mystery
Our fragility
Vulnerability
They show us our own soul
And our broken hearts
They cry for us and with us

The artist
The beautiful, crazy ones,
Fit for nothing reasonable
And mostly hopeless
At fitting into anything
Save us from
Rigidity
And the constant sameness
Of things

For god’s sake
Buy their stuff
Share it, rave about it
Love them, tell them you love them
You may be all they have
You may be what stands between them
And giving up

And if you are one of them
Know this
What you do is of value
It doesn’t matter who sees it
Who hears it
Who reads it
What matters is your soul
What matters is you do it
Just do it anyway
Give up on the reason why
Or the outcome
What you do matters
On levels of consciousness
Unseen and invisible
If you get reward on this plane
Great
If you don’t
Great
Do what you must
And do it with your brazen
Broken
Wounded
Wild
Crazy heart wide open.

The Majestic Invisible World Inside This One

I learned about the invisible world
From a wild Celtic shaman I worked with
For some years
A long time ago
He taught me many things
But one of them
Was how to talk to
What we can’t see
How to court beauty
How to move between worlds
He tore open the fabric of reality
Through ceremony, prayer, sweat lodge
Poetry and story telling
We lived in a hidden valley in deepest Wales
At night we all gathered around the fire
In the roundhouse
And listened to tales of old Ireland
When life was magical and mysterious
When warriors stood for something
Before everything became small and ordinary
We played music, sometimes wild and chaotic
And sometimes wistful and heart breaking

I learned about true power from him
I sought power in caves and waterfalls
On the top of mountains, spending nights alone
With just the elementals for company
I cried, raged, fumed and threw myself away
I found what was broken and false
I found what was hiding from the world
And I threw that part to the invisible wolves

I learned rituals, not pious or sanctimonious ones
But true prayer from the innermost
I spoke to the invisible ones
Regardless of whether I believed in them or not
I have seen things, felt things, known things
That defy ordinary consciousness

And I know that life is ten thousand times
More mysterious than we can comprehend
We live in a superficial reality
And underneath and inside it
Is a gold mine
A vast swirling majestic world
Inside each of us
It is the true world, the real world
And that is why I became this poet, this musician
This opener of doors
To show others the window
To their own soul.

I Feel You – VIDEO SONG

I FEEL YOU – For Amoda’s Mother.

A song I wrote at the time of my wife’s Mother’s death. It was an extraordinary time. Deeply moving.

The river was so long we got carried away
All the while we waited for something to say
And everyone was wearing white
We couldn’t work out why it was the only game in town
We waited for a sign to take the television down
And I was always lost in space
You just kept repeating amazing grace

I feel you, I feel you
I feel you all the time

We walked beyond the bridge and wondered where we should go
We didn’t know the road would take us to the great unknown
I didn’t recognize the place
Further up the path and we got lost in the trees
We couldn’t find our way and we fell down on our knees
And prayed for a holy sign, I remember thinking how life is divine

I feel you, I feel you
I feel you all the time

When you went away I looked everywhere for you
I found you in the places and the things that I do
I see you everywhere I go
I feel you in my heart and in my blood and in my skin
I feel you in the life I live and everywhere we’ve been
I see you in the empty space
And I can hear you singing amazing grace

I feel you, I feel you
I feel you all the time
