The Life Long Journey of Surrender

The only freedom is within
It cannot be found
In some future destination
Or some well devised method of attainment
Freedom has nothing to do with attainment

The most powerful human being
Is one who is free
Of the constraints of the world
Not by wielding force
Or through money or fame
Not through any egoic value at all

But one who is capable of unconditional love

To develop the capacity of surrender of the willful self
Is a life long journey
Whose destination is always here and now
Never there and then

The true warrior fails their way to love
For that very failure brings the humility necessary.

THE WAVES OF PHENOMENA

We are all thrown around
And buffeted by the same waves
It never stops, this movement,
Until we depart these shores

Sometimes it seems
We have tamed the waves
Or learned to surf them
With dexterity and grace
And then we turn our backs
Or slip into arrogance

And a mighty thunderous
Wall of water engulfs us
Half drowns us
And turns us upside down
We cough, splutter and cry
Rail against the water
Rage against the ocean itself

Then we dry ourselves off
And begin again

In many ways
That’s all there is.

All Our Ancestors

To a certain extent
Ancestral heritage
Is the passing on
Of unresolved wounds
Hardship and pain
Survivalism and suffering

That which our ancestors
Could not meet and transform
Is passed on like a hot coal
To the next generation
On and on it goes
Even on the cellular level

We are vibrationally and energetically
The carriers of our ancestors
Some of our deepest unknowable movements
May have the fragrance
Of countless generations in them

And now you and I are here
With the opportunity
To end the ancestral passing on
Of unmet wounds

You and I
Are where the buck stops
And the resolution, forgiveness and love
We can find in ourselves
Will be passed on, not just to future generations,
But even on some mysterious level
To those ancestors who played some part
In bringing us here

That’s how important our transformation is.

BITTER SWEET

Oh! the bitter sweet taste of this life
The endless searching for the sweet
And the turning away from the bitter
Yet this bitter taste
Is unavoidable
And, tough as it may be,
We must somehow find a way
To reconcile these seeming opposites

There is a place within us
That knows the bitter and the sweet
To be the same
May our true search be for that resting place.

WELCOME THE WORLD HOME

The world of your experience
Wants to come home
And it can only do it through you

You are the way
That the world becomes purified
And you can only do this
By opening so wide
Into the deepest acceptance
That everything is allowed
To find its true resting place

This itself is profound
And is how the world is healed.

Grace Misses Us

It is the mystery that informs us
Yet we turn away again and again
In our arrogance and control

The unknown surrounds us
And is the very core of our existence
Yet we scramble and clutch at the known
Terrified of the void

Our lives are borrowed
Our breath sacred
Grace itself has bestowed upon us this miracle
Yet we turn away
Distracted by phenomena
Lost in our petty games
Forgetting to say thank you

But everything borrowed
Must be returned
And breath will run its course
The game will be over

And grace will call us home
Having missed us so badly.

EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT

And then one day you realize
At the end of life
Or at some point on the journey
That it’s all God
It’s all one being life-ing itself
And the mind can’t grasp this
But the soul knows it
And the spirit knows it
And the unconditional heart feels it
And the inner eye sees it

And this causes such a wave of love
That the whole universe falls into it
And you understand
That everything is really alright

And nothing you do, or don’t do, changes that.

THE RIVER SPIRIT

You dip a toe into the stream
But the river spirit
Grabs your leg and pulls you in
‘Help I’m drowning!’ You scream
‘I wanna to go back where it’s safe,
I’m out of control,’ You howl
The river spirit says, ‘Don’t worry,
I’m taking you somewhere beyond
Your imagination.’

This struggle goes on for some time
This push and pull as the river winds its way
Sometimes gently, sometimes ferociously

By and by you forget the time
You sat on the river bank
Dipping your toe
For you have been changed by that river
Hard edges softened
Fear of drowning gone
All anxiety about control vanished
Past itself little more than a shadow

And you arrive at the ocean
Where the river deposits you
But, instead of being shocked at the vastness
You simply melt into it
With sweet relief
And delicious gratitude.

The Sincere One

Discover your unconditional heart
And make your one true purpose
To stay there, no matter what

Life will hear your call
And bring you everything you need
To forge your blade
And test your resolve

And you will have to decide
How to meet those invitations

There is no avoiding this
If you are sincere about your journey

That is all.

The Deepest Unconditionality

There is an inner depth
Available to us
If we are able to dive in
And keep diving
Through layer upon layer
Past what is known
Beyond doubt
Beyond certainty
Through the dense layer of belief
Past security and fear
Through the clouds
Of conditionality
And transaction upon which
We base our lives

Deeper and deeper
And deeper still
Until all vestige
Of this humanness
Is but a whisper
And there
We will discover
God

For we will have fallen into the unconditional realm
Where all is open and accepted
In the most profound way
Because everything is known to be one thing
And that, my friend, is the most astonishing realization.
