Radical Beauty

Throw away all this politeness
And speak up for beauty
And love!

Declare yourself a radical
Don’t hold your tongue any longer
Speak what is deepest in your heart
Serve your soul’s loving
What is there to lose?

You have been holding it back
Fitting in, keeping quiet,
Trying to find the middle ground
Not rocking the boat
Enough!

Rock the boat beautifully
Declare yourself to the world
Show your hand
Daunt your friends with your love
And with your honesty
Speak up for kindness and tenderness
The way those who laud hatred so proudly do

Serve beauty with all your heart
And something mysterious will happen
Beauty will see and hear you
And start serving you…not your false self
But the true and authentic you

Jump in, let’s go!
There’s not a moment to lose…

Even the Stars Bowed Down

Overwhelmed by all this human insanity
Did he sit in such a silence
That the world stopped all movement

And in that bitter sweet moment
The sky opened its heart
The moon shed its tears
And the sun offered its light
He lifted his weary head
And beheld a beauty
Of such heavenly wonder
That even the stars bowed down
And the universe stopped breathing

From that divine pause
Did time itself come
Dripping like nectar
Precious moment upon precious moment
Creating all this we see and know

Life is more vast than we can imagine
We live on the surface of something
So huge it would overwhelm us if we could see it
Our five senses allow us to navigate life here
But do not mistake perception for reality
They are not the same thing

In a certain enlightened experience once
I saw something with my inner eye
I saw time dripping into reality
Beyond mind, beyond our perceptive senses
I saw something so extraordinary it brought me to my knees
And I understood that we can never understand
Something changed in me forever that day
And I began to serve the divine that animates all things.

The Holy Water We Swim In

Oh! how much I adore these words
Surrender
Kindness
Grace
Beauty
Tenderness
Vulnerability
Innocence

All of them
The arms and the legs of love
All of them underpinning
Our humanity

When the fighting is done
We return to these qualities
Without them we are not human

They are the holy waters we swim in
I see people struggle in their lives
Because they have forgotten
To dive into the only ocean that matters.

Becoming a Pearl

Let the grit of our suffering
Become the pearl of our offering

There is always a purpose to our pain
It can feed our hate and resentment
Or, with great stealth and much grace,
It can feed a love so deep, so powerful,
It touches others and transforms them

Let wounds, trauma and suffering
Not be wasted on more negativity

But let it feed us and grow us
So we become something new
Something powerful and noble
Something worthy and beautiful
And let us carry ourselves
With humble magnificence
Even with all that has been broken.

The Language of Beauty

There is a world inside this one
Its language is beauty
To talk to that world
You must learn to speak
In a different way
The way of the heart

When the relationship
Between the inner world
And the surface world
Is remembered and honored
Harmony returns

First there must be a shedding
Of the old self, the outer skin
The layers of protection
Built up by the illusory need
To live inside walls

You must be willing
To become wild again
To awaken wildness within
To awaken vulnerability
To awaken innocence
And fearlessness
It’s not as terrifying as it sounds
It’s a hair’s breadth away
As close as your skin
And it wants you
As much as you want it
It’s in your willingness to surrender

And then, when you begin to understand
The language of beauty
The world opens its gates to you
And, even though it may look like hell,
You will only see heaven
Not as a delusion
But as a reality.

Warrior of Love

Even though I may be knocked down
And everything taken from me
Even if the worst may happen
As it does for some innocent people
And even though they may try and get me to hate
I will not

The journey to get to love
Has been too tough
Has forged me like a blade
And turned me to a warrior
And even though what may happen
Will be terrible
I will not become like that
I will not surrender my love
I will not become hate
It is too painful to bear
And I will never stoop that low

There is a kind of dignity
The warrior carries
An inner flame
An inner voice that says,
‘I will not be ruled
By anyone else
I will serve that which is true
And I will never yield that.’

This is my aspiration
To be bold of heart
And present of mind
And meet all of this hate
Like a warrior of love.

Gratitude

Today I decided to be grateful
For what I have, for who I am
And for the life that circles around me
Even if the mind yells ‘It’s not enough!’
I will stand firm in gratitude

For mind does not make the decision
Heart makes this kind of decision
Mind wants to say ‘What about this
And what about that, it’s all a problem.’
But heart says ‘None of this matters
For gratitude is the key to joy
And the path to peace
Gratitude is for love
And has nothing to do
With how much there is of anything

So I sit here in conscious appreciation
Even in the midst of problems
And the idea of less than perfect
Not waiting any longer
To give thanks for this, and this, and this

We leave it too late to love what we have
And it so easily slips through our fingers
Before we have said thank you.
