A Kind of Hidden Beauty

There is a kind of beauty
That cannot be seen
With the ordinary eye
It is beyond the reach
Of the narcissistic ego

This beauty is the truth
Behind the show, behind the mask
It is the beauty of openness
The beauty of the tender heart
It is the beauty that is revealed
When there is no more pretending

Only the nakedness of being

It is the beauty of innocence
It cannot be faked or forced
Manipulated or manufactured

This beauty is a meeting
Between innocent seeing
And innocence revealed
It is exquisite
And, despite our cynical world,
Is still there
Waiting for us all

Most are so preoccupied
With surviving in the marketplace
They lose their beauty
And settle for the mask.

Reclaimed Innocence

When I sit with you
And you show me your self
You reveal the pain and darkness
And all the times your innocence
Was closed down in fear

I see you
I see inside you
I see that which is not broken
I know you want to fix yourself
Because it hurts
But there is nothing to fix
Because you are not broken
Just wounded

I see your vulnerability
And sadness
Your anger and doubt
But there! In all that
I see your beauty
Still there, hiding, waiting

I see your innocence
Not gone, just waiting
Silently in the shadows
For the moment it can return
Surely it will return upon death
But there is a way
To allow innocence back, now

Innocence is the heart
It is like the sun
It can’t break
It can be hidden by dark clouds
That last a lifetime

Open all your doors
The ones you have kept closed
For protection all these years
You no longer need them
You are stronger than you know
And your strength
Is your openness
Your tenderness
And your reclaimed innocence.

Let Life Pierce Your Defenses

Pierce this heart to the core
I no longer care for civility
Or behaving myself
Let what is deep inside
Flow out into the world
And flood the barrenness

What is everyone so afraid of
Love is not to be feared
It’s lack of love
That should be feared

Pierce this heart to the core
And see the sorrow
And the grief
See the joy and the beauty
Flow out like a never ending river
Be done with all this pretense
Only the wetness of love matters

Let life go all the way in
No more holding it all back
Keeping it all together
Playing the safe game
Let it in
Allow love to flow
In and out
It’s what you are for
It’s who you are
Beyond the surface dance

And now is the time
Not soon
Not when you are ready
When things are a little better
And you are more prepared
But now, and now, and now.

Take Off The Armor, It’s No Longer Needed

This armor we wear
So convincingly
Shouldn’t last forever
It’s not meant to
It’s just supposed to protect us
For a while, while we are raw
And hurting
But we forget to take it off
And we forget we have it on

But over time we weary of it
And long for our nakedness
And innocence

And there it is
The very armor we donned
For protection
Is stuck to us
Locking us in
We thought we were
Keeping the world out
But we were shutting ourselves in

And that is where the journey takes place
With great tenderness and care
Allowing, removing, revealing
Trusting that what is being protected
And imprisoned
Is ready to breathe,
Is ready to stand naked in the world

Eventually the armor must come off
And oh! what lies behind that armor
Is the true beauty and naked truth
That has always been there
Silently and patiently waiting
For that time when it could live again
In freedom and natural joy

This journey is worth everything
Every tear, every struggle
Every drop of surrender
Every rageful scream
And every hot emotion

Whatever it takes to remove the armor
Is worth it
To become naked once again.

The Holy Water We Swim In

Oh! how much I adore these words
Surrender
Kindness
Grace
Beauty
Tenderness
Vulnerability
Innocence

All of them
The arms and the legs of love
All of them underpinning
Our humanity

When the fighting is done
We return to these qualities
Without them we are not human

They are the holy waters we swim in
I see people struggle in their lives
Because they have forgotten
To dive into the only ocean that matters.

Come To The Garden

Come with me
My downhearted one
Come into the garden
And meet your innocence
Come and see your joy intact
Your playfulness still alive
Come and smell the sweet fragrance
Of your beauty untarnished by life
Come, we will discover what is not broken,
Yes, we will encounter love,
Love at its finest, its bravest
Its most powerful
It may overwhelm you
But let this overwhelm be a way
Of remembering

And when you have seen the beauty
And tasted the nectar
And imbibed the fragrance
When you have touched the passion

You will be ready to return
But I warn you
Your heart will never close again
You will have to carry the fragrance of the garden
Until you leave this world
And everyone who meets you
Will wonder where you have been.

Tend to your Garden

Distracted by practicalities
He forgot to nurture his soul
Slowly his inner flower wilted
And beauty did perish
The light of love faded
And life became meaningless

Without the inner life
The life that brings joy and depth
We are little more than robots

Nurture and water the garden
Tend to it diligently with great care
It will feed you and ripen you
You will become a great tree
And others will come
To savor your fruit.
