The Door of Sadness

The door of personal sadness and grief
When embraced and opened to fully
May lead to the palace of realization
Of universal suffering
And the nature of temporariness

The one who can live from broken heartedness
Can walk through the valley of desolation
With equanimity and the greatest acceptance
Of the way things are

That one may be a healer
A homeopathic remedy
For the collective body
That struggles so much
As it constantly turns away
From the painful truth of life

The bitter sweet path
Brings depth and richness
To all it touches.

Grace Misses Us

It is the mystery that informs us
Yet we turn away again and again
In our arrogance and control

The unknown surrounds us
And is the very core of our existence
Yet we scramble and clutch at the known
Terrified of the void

Our lives are borrowed
Our breath sacred
Grace itself has bestowed upon us this miracle
Yet we turn away
Distracted by phenomena
Lost in our petty games
Forgetting to say thank you

But everything borrowed
Must be returned
And breath will run its course
The game will be over

And grace will call us home
Having missed us so badly.

The Sincere One

Discover your unconditional heart
And make your one true purpose
To stay there, no matter what

Life will hear your call
And bring you everything you need
To forge your blade
And test your resolve

And you will have to decide
How to meet those invitations

There is no avoiding this
If you are sincere about your journey

That is all.

It is OK

It’s ok to feel afraid
It’s ok to feel heartbroken
It’s ok to feel angry
It’s ok to fall on your knees, beaten by life
It’s ok to cry an ocean of tears
With no seeming end in sight
It’s ok to surrender to grief when it calls
It’s ok to come face to face with meaninglessness
It’s ok to be bored, fed up, listless
It’s ok to search, and it’s ok to stop searching
It’s ok to laugh, to dance and to celebrate
Even in the face of suffering
It’s ok to stop
Whatever habit you have been feeding
It’s ok to change your allegiance from your own mind
To tenderness, to kindness, to openness
It’s ok to change, even after a lifetime
Of carving yourself into being someone
You thought you needed to be
It’s ok to throw those old idols away
It’s ok to throw those old self images away
It’s ok to transform and renew
It’s ok
It’s ok
It’s ok.

Drenched in Sorrow

Here we are
Crying the grief of the world
Broken hearted lovers
Drenched in sorrow

No knowing if these tears
Are ours or the worlds
Or just the fact of being human

No more lost in denial
Or any attempt to bear it all
No more brave face or false mask

Just this surrender
And in this great allowing
Something new stirs within us
And within the heart of the world

New growth, a new way
A new vision emerging
Out of the rain

May we walk tenderly on the new path
Yes, we are drenched in sorrow,
But that sorrow is the doorway
To life’s true beauty

And few dare go through

You and I are made for this.

THE DANCE OF EXISTENCE

This morning
In the early hours of silent dawning
The gentle sound
Of a conversation
Wrapped me in its arms

The coyote yipped its magic and trickery
It spoke of how things are not what they seem to be
And it laughed at how serious owl was

Owl was silent for a long time
Unimpressed with coyote’s jibes
‘I see you coyote, even in this darkness,’
Said the wise owl

This jousting game continued for some time
Each taking its turn
Coyote darting around, needling owl
And owl looking on with regal nonchalance

Both carried the wisdom of the deepest intelligence
And as I lay there
Absorbed by the yip yip and the hoot hoot
I fell into a reverie
Of such beauty I wept
Everything, and everyone, all humans
And all the creatures of the world
Warm blooded and cold blooded
Flying creatures and swimming creatures
Were dancing the dance of existence
Even the trees and the plants
And the rocks and the planets
Were doing the dance of existence
Each content with its own realm of being
And each filled with joy
At seeing the others dancing
Everything in utter harmony
With everything else

When I awoke all was silence
Dawn was breaking open
Yet, somewhere in the distance,
From the top of a tall tree
A crow sang the world awake.

Return to the Garden

Heart is heavy
Weighed down by mind
Essential purity of love
Covered over by past pain

Mind is foggy
Clouded by fear
Clear seeing occluded
Divided by righteousness

Weary humans
Lost and angry
Desperate for meaning
Grabbing illusory power
In the face of eternity

We have given ourselves to a dream
Believing it to be real
Stumbled into a dark forest
Full of tyrannous shadows
And menacing threats

Only the silent humility of openness
The peace that passeth mind’s understanding
Can bring us back to our light
Tears may fall, thunder may rage
Grief’s rain may become an ocean
And swallow us up

But it will be true
And our hearts and minds
Will be cleansed of past pain
And resolved of righteousness

And we will return to the garden
Renewed and refreshed from our dream.

FEAR AND LOVE

Fear demanded attention
Threatening all manner of horrors
It rose up like a demon
And covered the radiant sky
In a dark and ominous cloud
It proclaimed dominion over the world
And over all beings that walked upon it
Humanity shuddered under the weight
Unable to resist fear’s manipulation of truth

And then love arrived
Not a weak kind of transactional love
But a powerful love with light at its centre
Blazingly brilliant sun at its pulsating heart
Ferocious and wrathful, resolute and affirmative
The kind of love that dissolves everything that is not itself

The same battles have been playing themselves out For millennia
In the human heart and soul and mind
Generation upon generation
Individuals, societies and civilizations
Rising and falling,
Shrouded by the veil of fear
Coming into the light of love
And disappearing back into the darkness

Only an inner revolution
In the heart and the soul of each individual
Truly matters
Each of us called to meet the tyranny of fear
And its constant desire for dominion
And to find it within ourselves
To blaze unconditional, ferocious, affirmative, love
Like a millions suns took up residence in our chest
And now all that comes into our orbit
Is dissolved back into the love that we really are.

IT HURTS

Yes my friend it hurts
Life hurts
In fact it can be excruciating
Agony, to the bone suffering,
There is no escaping pain
Except by denying it
Or numbing ourselves to it
But neither strategy actually works
The pain just gets deflected or buried

No, life hurts, that’s just the basic truth
Even spirituality won’t help you
Although it may offer the carrot
Of a painless life
And if you want a detached existence
Whereby the human experience
With its inherent pain
Is turned away from
So be it

But still it will hurt

No my friend, the only way is through,
The only choice is to open so wide
To sacrifice all resistance to life
So that the pain, the causes of pain,
The suffering, the grief, even the rage and fury
Are all included in that opening
Without identifying with any of it

That is the art of the deepest acceptance of life
And all that comes with it

A beautiful, excruciating, ecstatic, annihilating,
Maddening, confusing, overwhelming, existence
That brings us to our knees.
