The Wisdom of Emptiness

Let’s meet when the sun goes down
And sit quietly together
Forget the world for a while
And turn our attention
To the silence we are
There is a beauty that nourishes the soul
When we sit quietly together
It’s not found in the busy world
In the cafes or the shops
It’s not found in any of our doing
It is simply this, naked and free,
No need to speak
Or share knowledge
We can let the wisdom of emptiness
Say more than all this talking

The wise one sits to one side
Silently looking at the clouds
As they flow through the empty sky
He left the market long ago.

No Destination But Here

Who are we
Going nowhere
As fast as possible
What destination
Do we imagine
Lies ahead
That causes us
To hurtle forward
At the expense
Of living here and now

The truth is
It is our imagination itself
That dangles the carrot
In front of our donkey faces

I have looked into the future
And recognized it is there anyway
Whether I race towards it or not
In fact the most terrifying thing of all
Is that it’s like a an unstoppable tsunami

Time makes the future an inevitability
We are powerless to stop

And yet the deeper we go inside ourselves
We may find
That which is beyond time itself
Beyond imagination of future and past
And that is where we might, through grace,
Find some peace
In the timeless place within
In the silence and emptiness beyond form

There is no destination but here.

New Mexico

We have fallen in love
With enchantment itself
When we set foot
In New Mexico
It was like returning home
For both of us
We saw it in the sky
As the afternoon clouds gathered
To rain love on the dry earth
And felt it underfoot
On the dusty winding trails
It resounded in the curved walls
Of deep orange adobe
And in the very essence of all things
That are born and die there
We saw the rest of our weary days
Spent painting, writing, laughing, walking
Making music
And walking the two dogs
Who would find us
Such a longing has come upon us
For this aloneness
Just kicking around the desert
As the light fades

Make it so…
